For Young Carers Action Day, we’re proud to celebrate the young people who choose to build their careers in care.
Katherine began working in care at just 19 - but her journey started even earlier.
In 2022, at the age of 17, Katherine was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. What could have simply been a life-changing moment instead became a life-defining one.
“My life changed that day,” she reflects. “I realised I wanted to care for people the way I was cared for. I wanted to help people live the most independent life possible and show the same empathy that I was shown.”
Since starting her career, Katherine says she’s discovered a strength within herself she didn’t know she had.
“I’ve learned that I am more resilient than I ever thought. Caring for people at the end of their life is heartbreaking, but it’s comforting to know they are looked after, clean and treated with respect right to the end. It makes you appreciate your own life and reminds you to make memories while you can.”
One moment that stands out most to Katherine is supporting a client determined to rebuild her independence.
“We started with small things, like organising one cupboard in the kitchen. Then two. Then we worked on finding a way for her to wash her hair independently. We tried different approaches until we managed to use the sink - it was a huge accomplishment. Now she accesses the community and continues to build her independence. Looking back at where she started makes me incredibly proud.”
When asked what she would say to other young people considering a career in care, her answer is simple:
“It’s the most rewarding job. Sometimes you are the only person a client sees that day. You get to make them smile and help them feel ready to face the day. It’s a privilege to be welcomed into someone’s home and trusted with their care.”
We are incredibly proud to have Katherine as part of the Aurora Home Care team.
Bringing a Bright Start to Every Day.
